Lacrosse Update: Regarding COVID-19
Many have seen or received an update from the BCLA’s President Gerry Van Beek regarding lacrosse in British Columbia. Here is a snippit of the press release that is prudent for this season.
“As the weather improves, people will take to the outdoors for physical activity. We must all adhere to the safety requirements as detailed by government agencies and health authorities and be aware how to safely access facilities again. With some recreational facilities being made available in different jurisdictions, we want to inform our members that although facilities may be accessible, until the BC Lacrosse Association has “Return to Activity Guidelines” in place, the BCLA is not in a position to sanction any lacrosse activities.
We must also stress that when we do return to activity, the health and safety for all participants in the BC Lacrosse community is paramount and this is central to all of our decisions around COVID-19. All involved in our sport must take direction from the appropriate health authorities, including the Public Health Agency of Canada and the BC Ministry of Health. When we return to activity, the 2-meter social distancing measure is still in place, there will be hygiene restrictions, and there will be no competition given the 2-meter distancing. Sessions will include skills and training."
Although there has been no definitive statement regarding the cancellation of the 2020 box lacrosse season; we can obviously speculate that since there are social distancing measures in place and that any sessions will be skills based only, any chance of indoor competition this summer will likely not occur. The Western Lacrosse Association (WLA) and the Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) have already cancelled their seasons for this summer and are making plans to resume in 2021.
There are many questions to be answered leading in to next season regarding restrictions, competition, eligibility, etc. but those cannot be answered as it is way too early to know what stage the world will be because of the COVID-19 pandemic… only time will tell.
The PNWJLL and it’s member teams will know more by months end as we are patiently awaiting decisions to be made by our governing lacrosse body; but rest assured, any decisions regarding lacrosse in British Columbia will be made with the health and safety of all participants, staff and spectators in mind.
Stay healthy and safe everyone!
