The Saanich Express Executive have been working hard this past off-season planning and organizing for the 2019 PNWJLL, but what about the players? Since the beginning of February, many players have been working out in the gym and running a couple of times a week. Why you say? Regardless of tier, talent or expectation; players from Midget to Junior have been working out jointly so they can prepare for their upcoming Midget and Junior lacrosse seasons.

Returning 5th year Veteran players Jonny Harmsworth and Jorden Tytgat were recently interviewed as they prepare for Training Camp on Saturday March 16th. Read what they had to say about the upcoming season, the Express organization and their goals for their last Junior lacrosse league season.

Jonny Harmsworth

Question #1: How excited are you for the upcoming 2019 Jr. B lacrosse season?
I am very eager for the season to get started. Obviously, last year didn’t end the way we wanted both as a team and for me on a personal level, and I can’t wait to get back on the floor.

Question #2: What do you feel when you put on the Saanich Express jersey?
It’s a great feeling. It’s something new and exciting, and we’re really building towards something special with this organization. Being a part of the renamed inaugural team was a thrill, and it’s an honour to represent the Express every chance I get.

Question #3: If a potential player or parent asked you about your thoughts on the Saanich Express organization; how would you describe playing for them?
First class. Everything about this organization is top notch. Everything is made clear from the start, what’s expected from everyone on and off the floor, and it’s a great group who want to see the success of the team and each individual on it.

Question #4: What are your goals and expectations for this season?
I think we have a great shot at winning it all this year. With it being my last year of junior, it’d be nice to go out with some hardware, but overall I think we have a solid team and we’ll see how far we can go.

Jorden Tytgat

Question #1: How excited are you for the upcoming 2019 Jr. B lacrosse season?
I am extremely excited to play my final year of Junior lacrosse. I have really enjoyed conditioning sessions with the guys and can’t wait for lacrosse to get in to full swing.

Question #2: What do you feel when you put on the Saanich Express jersey?
I feel like I’m part of a family; a team that has great team culture and pride. I enjoyed playing minor lacrosse for the Saanich Tigers and moving up to the Junior Tigers but there was just something different about pulling the purple X over your head and looking in the mirror at the ghostly face peering out from the chest of my jersey. It was awesome!

Question #3: If a potential player or parent asked you about your thoughts on the Saanich Express organization; how would you describe playing for them?
I would confidently say “I feel honoured” to be part of the Express, it is truly something special. You are treated very well on and off the floor. What stands out for me is getting off work on a Wednesday evening and heading to Pearkes Arena to catch the bus for an 8pm game in Nanaimo. You get on the bus and have a bagged lunch and water waiting for you for the trip. Then after the game a pizza dinner is waiting for you when you load the bus for the ride home. It’s like we are all sons’ of the Organization.

Question #4: What are your goals and expectations for this season?
My goals are to be a leader for the rookies, put up points to help my team win games, and win Provincials. Each practice and game will be separate steps leading up to my goals. I would expect each of my teammates to treat each other like brothers. We are all part of something special here in Saanich.

Training camp begins Saturday March 16th @ 7pm at Pearkes Field House. Sign-in table opens at 6:30pm at Court #4.
