The Pacific Northwest Lacrosse League season begins begins the first week of May; and the Express start on Friday May 4th, 2018 vs. the Cowichan Thunder at the Archie Browning Arena, 1151 Esquimalt Road. The schedule can be found on the schedule page of our website.
The Saanich Express are pleased to announce its 2nd set of player signings for the 2018 season. From top left to right, bottom left to right are the following players whom have been signed to continue filling the 2018 season for the Express.
Griffin Payne is a 4th year Junior and a product of the Victoria-Esquimalt Eagles Lacrosse Association. A big strong defender; he will carry a lot of minutes on the floor this season as he helps lead a young Express team after a successful 2nd place Island finish last season.
Matt Caseley joins the Express as a 4th year rookie after taking some time off after Intermediate B lacrosse. Returning to the lacrosse floor after some time away has not been an issue to Matt as he is physically and mentally strong and has developed very well over training camp.
John Etzel signs as a 3rd year rookie and Junior free agent after spending the 2017 campaign with the Intermediate “A” Timbermen from Nanaimo. A pivotal piece in the building process for the Express, John will be a major threat in the transition game this season. Great speed, floor sense and a knack for burying the dagger into opponents on the scoreboard, John is a welcomed addition from the Junior “A” and “B1” program.
Dan Barrodale is returning for his 5th and final Junior season and will be relied upon to mentor and develop a young team into a strong, athletic defensive core f team players. His presence has already paid dividends as he looks to help lead this team into the 2018 campaign; and to seek a Provincial Championship.

Many training camps open up with players being excited to be attending, in hopes of making the team that invited them to camp. Most box season training sessions start in February in gymnasiums, outdoor boxes or recreation centers until dry floor opportunities present themselves. For the Saanich Express’ first training camp, it was outside the norm. Starting later than most Jr. B teams; they began camp on Easter Weekend, but that did not deter those players not away on vacation to take time out of their family weekends and from soaking up the beautiful weather to don their lacrosse gear and take part in training camp at Braefoot Box.
The camps first session was led by coaches Colin Bell and Tyson Leies; who were quite impressed with the effort and intensity that players put in for their first time on the floor for the new Express team. Realizing Rome wasn’t built in a day, the coaches took the time to provide instruction to all players in a group as well as individual setting. “Providing players with direction and following it up with constructive feedback allows a player the confidence to continue their development without fear of making mistakes” commented Coach Bell. “We know the players would be rusty, have troubles in the box with it being their first time on the floor since last summers seasons but wanted the kids to be assured that they had the confidence of the coaching staff to make mistakes and learn from them during training camp”, Coach Bell stated as practice ended.
A good turnout from players over this holiday weekend overall as the Express finish Day 1 of camp. Next session is on Wednesday April 4th, at the Pearkes Recreation Centre’s Fieldhouse – Court #4 at 8:00pm.
