Novice Buddy Day Helps Express Defeat Ravens

The Saanich Express defeated the Campbell River Ravens on Sunday June 12th, by the score of 15-6 with a little “motivational assistance” from the Saanich Tigers Novice team.

The Novice team chose to attend the Saanich Express Jr. B game as part of their season wind-up activities and support the Express as they reach their midway point of the PNWJLL season. The beginning of the game saw each Novice player introduced by name and number along with a designated Express Jr. player. All Novice players got to feel what it is like to be on the floor for a team introduction, get announced, stood for the ceremonial National Anthem and then proceeded off the floor after multiple “high-fives” to their Jr. counterparts.

The game started off quickly with each teams’ goaltender making some big saves and it wasn’t until 1/4 through the period when the Express got on the board with a goal my Sonny Miller. The goalies then took over again stymying shooters over the next 10 minutes. Jason Bobroske then rushes end to end to score then Bryan Toth on the PP a few minutes later and with the period running out, the Ravens Tyler Wingert got his team on the scoreboard sending the teams to the locker room with an Express 3-1 lead.

More events and activities took place during the first intermission. The Saanich Novice team played a half-floor inter-squad game with Saanich Express goaltender Alex Pocetti in net. THE KIDS HAD A BALL! The young team absolutely had a blast shooting against the Jr. Express goaltender, some even getting in a crease dive or two and giving the goalie an unnecessary “whack” in the shin pad as they ran by. The kids had great fun playing and appreciated the time taken by the Express goalie Alex Pocetti.

The second period started like the first with goaltenders Riley Gains (Express) and Coulton Darnell (Ravens) thwarting away shot after shot until the 13 minute mark. Will Hale buries a shot to give the Express a 4-1 lead but Ravens follow up with 2 immediate goals by Finnley Goodliffe to make the Ravens only down by 1 tally. Each team would trade goals but then Express rookie Brayden Upshon buried a late goal with seconds left to send the home team in to intermission with a 6-4 lead.

The 2nd intermission “frisbee toss” sponsored by Mikey’s Concrete is always a hit, selling out… allowing those in attendance to throw 200 frisbees on to the floor in hopes of winning a Tim’s Gift Card and an Express apparel pack.

Unfortunately for the Ravens, the flood gates opened in the third period and the Express freight train rolled through the period with 9 straight goals. The Ravens scored 2 late in the game on the PP but couldn’t muster any more to rally the shortened bench. Final score: Express 15 – Ravens 6.

A very large contingent of Navy League Cadets were also on hand to watch the game and celebrate with one another. Three NLCC (Navy League Corps of Canada) – Admiral Rayner (Victoria), Admiral Martin (Sidney) and Admiral RH Falls (Langford) enjoyed an afternoon of Pacific Northwest Junior Lacrosse. The Express would also like to recognize this years’ recipient of the 2022 Island Division and National Cadet of Canada winner (CPO1 Abigail Moss) from NLCC Admiral Martin. Congratulations!
