Express Outlast Timbermen in Close Game
Even with a short bench, the Nanaimo Timbermen came to play tonight out on the Peninsula as they traveled down from the Hub City to face the Saanich Express at the Panorama Arena.
Nanaimo opened the scoring 24 seconds in to the game with a goal by Zach Giszas. The Express tied the match 2 minutes later on a nice shot by Mike Johansen. Both teams traded 4 goals apiece for the remainder of the period to be tied 5-5 to end the first frame. Cue the 1st intermission “Shoot to Score” game where an approximately 2 year old toddler came out with his Dad to shoot at the board. Shooting from the edge of the crease, the little gaffer made an effort and won himself a window decal and Tim’s card compliments of the Express.
The Timbermen again brought the action to the Railmen as they scored first in the 2nd period but then Saanich scored back to back goals to lead 7-6. Nanaimo tied it up with 12:39 to go in the period but the Express finally answered the cheers of the crowd and potted 4 unanswered goals before the T-Men responded to make the score 11-8 at the 2nd intermission. The now popular “frisbee toss” has fans excited to be part of the activities the Express put on. Today’s winner was the closest to date, with their frisbee being within inches of the centre circle, winning themselves $20 from Mikey’s Concrete Ltd.
The third period was a bit better display of ball movement as the Express scored 4 goals in the last 10 minutes while the Timbermen rallied at the 14:53 mark of the period to draw closer, but that was as close as it was going to get. Final score: Express 15 & Nanaimo 9.
Next game for Saanich is Saturday June 8th at 8:00pm as your Express take on the Oceanside Sharks at the Panorama Arena (*not Save-On-Foods Arena).
